Impact Fund Endorses Alderman Ameya Pawar for Chicago City Treasurer

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 25, 2019) -- Today, the Indian American Impact Fund (“Impact Fund”) endorsed Ameya Pawar for City Treasurer of Chicago, Illinois

Dedicated to improving the lives of Chicago’s working families, Alderman Ameya Pawar was elected eight years ago to the Chicago City Council. Since then, he has fought for the city’s most vulnerable populations and worked to advance social justice, workers’ rights, and economic justice. He also serves as Executive Director of One Illinois, a non-profit news outlet that works to bridge divides across race, class and geography in the state. “We are extremely proud to endorse Ameya Pawar to be Chicago’s next Treasurer,” said Deepak Raj, co-founder of Impact and chair of the Impact Fund. “The first Indian American elected to serve the City of Chicago, he has distinguished himself by working to bring together Chicago’s diverse communities to solve the problems of our nation’s third largest city.”

“Real influence to positively change our communities and improve the lives of our fellow Americans lies at the state and local level,” added Raj Goyle, co-founder of Impact and a former member of the Kansas House of Representatives. “We also need fresh thinking and perspectives of communities traditionally underrepresented in the halls of government. Ameya’s commitment to justice is rooted in his own story. His immigrant father toiled in harsh conditions to support his family. Now, Ameya seeks to help others escape the same burden.”

“I am proud to have the support of the Indian American Impact Fund. The values that I learned from my family and our community guide my everyday life and my campaign.” said Alderman Pawar. “I am committed to increasing the diversity of thought needed to enhance public discourse and find innovate ways to improve Chicago’s environmental and public health, finance the debt that saddles so many, and invest in our infrastructure and people.”
