There were 2.4 million Indian immigrants in the US as of 2015, according to Washington think tank Migration Policy Institute, the second-largest immigrant group after Mexicans, almost 6% of the 43.3 million foreign-born population. Despite a reputation for leadership in technology, business and education, Indian-Americans have always punched below their weight in public life. 

However, things are changing.
